Halleljuah! We are almost there!

We are getting SO close to "officially" opening the doors of Redenius Chiropractic! We will be working hard throughout this next week to finish all of the small things that need to be put in place before "officially" opening the doors.

As many might have noticed, our big window decals list many of the services we provide, and if you drive by, you will notice that there is much more than just "back-cracking" going on at Redenius Chiropractic!

Because we are so close to opening, this blog post lists just some of what Redenius Chiropractic can offer you and your family. Read on to learn the answers to some FAQ's we frequently get about the clinic.

Spinal Adjustments-  Dr. Redenius will use manipulation with our patients to correct misalignments in the body. If left untreated, these misalignments can cause patients a wide range of unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, stiffness, decreased range of motion, low back pain, numbness, and much more. Though most adjustments in a chiropractic office are of the spine, Redenius Chiropractic also provides extremity adjustments. Because Dr. Redenius took a substantial amount of additional training beyond the required course work at Palmer College, he is well qualified to adjust both upper and lower extremities ranging from patients feet to shoulders.  If you have never had your feet adjusted--try it out--seriously!

Activator- The activator, or "clicker" as it is commonly referred to, is a device that allows Dr. Redenius to adjust you without having to physically manipulate your body. If you are one that does not like "your back cracked" (for lack of a better term), the activator is a way to get the benefits from an adjustment without a physical manipulation.

Spinal Decompression- Many individuals do not realize how beneficial spinal decompression therapy is for people who are experiencing pain. Individuals with herniation's, slipped discs, ruptured discs, disc tears, bulging discs, disc degeneration, degenerative disc disease, spinal canal stenosis, facet syndrome, sciatia, and back pain in general are commonly treated using decompression therapy. A lot of people ask if this therapy hurts, and it is actually quite opposite of that. Most patients describe the treatment as very relaxing (a few have even fallen asleep)! More information on spinal decompression can be found here.

Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy- Chiropractic care is extremely safe and beneficial for expecting mother's. Chiropractors that have been trained to work with pregnant women may use tables that adjust for a pregnant woman’s body, and they will use techniques that avoid unneeded pressure on the abdomen. During pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. These changes can result in a misaligned spine or joints. It is also important for a pregnant mom to establish pelvic balance and alignment. Seeking out chiropractic care during a pregnancy can help not only with joint and lower back pain, but can also help prepare the body for an easier and safer delivery.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care- Patients of ALL ages (even babies) benefit from chiropractic care. At Redenius Chiropractic, patients of all ages are encouraged to come in to receive chiropractic care. Many do not know that chiropractic care helps children of all ages with issues like: ear aches, bed-wetting, ADD/ADHD, growth-pains, colic, sleep problems, Torticollis, scoliosis, head pains, teething. This is just a short list of what chiropractic care can do for young patients.

Nutritional Counseling- Dr. Redenius has extensive education on nutrition. He can help you learn how what you eat and when you eat it impacts your daily life. He can also help explain how diet impacts pre-existing conditions as well as how diet can be used to help prevent chronic disease. Dr. Redenius can sit down with you to discuss meal plan options or just overall nutritional guidelines you should seek to follow based off your individual needs.

Therapeutic Modalities- These modalities treat injuries, back pain, muscle tightness, etc., etc. etc. Dr. Redenius provides ultrasounds, decompression therapy, ice therapy, and electronic stimulation as therapeutic modalities for his patients.

DOT/Sports Physicals- Dr. Redenius provides both DOT and sports physicals for his patients.  DOT physicals are just $90.00 and sports physicals are just $25.00 with a free t-shirt! Call today to get yours in before school starts!

X-Ray's- Not only are x-ray's used to address the needs of injured patients, x-rays are used to initially treat patients as well. In order to receive the most accurate chiropractic care possible, Dr. Redenius may suggest x-raying your spine to get a better picture of what your spinal health looks like.

Athletic Training- Dr. Redenius received his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training, and has over six years of athletic training experience. He served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the men's and women's rugby teams at Palmer College in Davenport. Dr. Redenius is qualified and knowledgeable in knowing how to treat athletic injuries of all levels. He can also provide x-rays to athletes who suffer from an injury. If the x-ray shows a fracture, he will refer out to a qualified health care specialist.

Massage- Massage therapy is also offered at Redenius Chiropractic. Haley Abbott, LMT, is a very qualified massage therapist who has over ten years of massage experience. She offers a wide range of techniques. Call Redenius Chiropractic at 712-464-3301 to set up your first massage appointment with Haley today!

A final note: As stated in a previous blog post, pain is usually the LAST symptom of dis-ease. Often times, an issue goes on for a long time before the body decides to "tell you about it." If we leave you with anything this week, we hope to leave you with the understanding of how important preventative health care is. Eating healthy foods, exercising, and making regular visits to Redenius Chiropractic will help you feel better in all areas of your life, and we promise you will see benefits from being proactive about your own health and well-being.

You can call 712-464-3301 today to set up your first appointment with Dr. Redenius or your first massage with Haley!

Eat your fruits and veggies!

Contrary to what most of us want to believe, donuts are not, in fact WHOLE foods. Sorry all of you Dunkin' Donuts lovers out there!
Recently, I read some statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that were quite alarming. I did not realize that as of 2012, about half of the adults in America (117 million people) had one or more chronic health conditions, and one in four adults have two or more chronic health problems.
If that is not unsettling enough, the CDC also found that seven of the top 10 causes of death back in 2010 were due to chronic diseases. They also found that more that 78 million Americans were obese--and that was six years ago.
The CDC statistics paint an alarming picture that overall, Americans are not very healthy. The problem is not necessarily that 50% of adults have a chronic disease. The problem is that the majority of these diseases are preventable.
It is no secret that our government spends billions of dollars on treating these diseases and researching cures. And the advancements they have made have been incredible. However, after years of research on it, they came to the conclusion that these diseases are much easier to prevent than they are to cure.
So, what was their recommendation for preventing these diseases?
7-13 servings of RAW fruits and vegetables EVERY day.
Here's another problem, though. Hardly anyone actually eats 7-13 servings of RAW fruits and veggies every day.
There is good news, though!
The good news is that there is a product out there that will help you get the nutrients your body is craving, and it is called Juice Plus. You may have heard us mention Juice Plus before, and I would like to quickly tell you why Juice Plus is so awesome.
Juice Plus bridges the gap between what our body needs (those fruits and vegetables) to what we actually put in our mouth. The Juice Plus company makes these awesome capsules that, if taken, give your body nutrients from over THIRTY fruits and vegetables. Yes, THIRTY fruits and vegetables! They literally take the fruits and veggies right off the tree, ground them up, and put them in a capsule for you.
Some people argue that no "capsule" should ever replace actual food. And we agree. However, rarely anyone gets nutrients from 7-13 RAW super foods EVERY day. We just don't have access to these super foods here in small town Iowa, and if we do, they are SO expensive.
Think of it this way: your body is like a car. The "gas" you put into your body are macro-nutrients (protein, carbs, fats). This makes your body "run," much like gas makes a car run. The "oil" you should put into your body are the nutrients you get from super-food fruit and veggies. Your body CANNOT run without the oil! However, many of us do not give our bodies the same amount of TLC that we give our cars. We need to give our bodies these nutrients!
Juice Plus capsules (or chewies if you do not want to swallow capsules) should NOT replace fruits and vegetables in your diet. However, if taken every day, your body will start thriving because you are giving your body the nutrients it is craving.
In addition to the capsules, the Juice Plus company makes nutritional shakes. These shakes are made out of REAL, whole foods. There are no synthetic products in the shakes. It is made out of plant-based proteins. They are VERY reasonable in price, and when incorporated into a diet, can replace a meal or a snack that is often times made up of empty calories. Juice Plus also makes yummy bars that replace empty calories when eaten as a snack.
What we love most about Juice Plus (aside from, well, everything), is that their products are made out of REAL food. The sugar in it? Well, that is fructose sugar (sugar from FRUIT). Sugar from the literal FRUIT that is ground up into your capsule. Are there some carbohydrates? Well, yes, but they are the GOOD carbohydrates. They are the complex carbohydrates that come from PLANTS and VEGETABLES. The shakes are made of a perfect mixture of two carbohydrates for every one protein, so the shakes are a perfect breakfast option or post-workout snack option.
When a person chooses to incorporate the shakes and the capsules into their daily life, we advise them to limit their simple carbohydrates (white breads, pastas, donuts, etc.), sugars, dairy products, and soda/sugary beverages. We encourage them to incorporate more water and exercise in their daily routine. We also challenge them to do it for 120 days (and stick to it)! The Juice Plus company named it the Transform 120 challenge, because you will undoubtedly see a change in those 120 days.
There has been so much research on the Juice Plus company, and the research has found that individuals who incorporate the capsules and shakes into their diet see benefits like lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, better digestive health, more energy, clearer skin, an increase in lean muscle, weight loss, etc. etc. etc.
We also love that if a mom or dad takes the Juice Plus capsules, their kids (over the age of 4) can get the children's Juice Plus chewies for free. We have met so many parents who have seen their children go off ADHD medicine; experience less illness; and have fewer (if any) doctor visits once they incorporate Juice Plus into their daily life.

I realize that we have mentioned Juice Plus in our blog before, but recently we have had quite a few inquiries regarding what it is. Do your body a favor and at least look into providing it with the nutrients it needs! If you'd like more information on Juice Plus, or if you'd like to order it for yourself and your family, feel free to e-mail lakecity24hourfitness@gmail.com or call 712-464-3301.
And if this was not convincing enough, check out this short, two minute video from the Founding Director of Yale's Preventative Medicine Department, Dr. David Katz, MD. In this video, he explains some of the benefits of Juice Plus. Here is the video: Dr. Katz Video

How to treat those annoying (and sometimes debilitating) headaches.

Headaches are one of the most common types of pain that people experience every day. Researchers found that 9 out of 10 adults in America experience pain from headaches on a regular basis. The pain can range from an annoying mild discomfort to a throbbing pain. Some are bad enough that individuals miss out on work or fun activities because of their debilitating headache. Although people first usually turn to over-the-counter pain killers to treat their headache, chiropractic care can help both lessen the severity and frequency of headaches.

The largest percentage of headaches (around 90%) fall into what is called "primary headaches". These headaches are usually tension headaches. They are brought on by having tense muscles in the neck area or a misalignment (subluxation) of the neck vertebrae. These types of headaches are more of  a "symptom," not an illness. Many headaches that Americans experience are simply due to dehydration. If you are experiencing a headache, the first question you should ask yourself is whether or not you are dehydrated. The headache could be a symptom of a lack of water in your body, so your first method of treatment should just be drinking water. Another factor that could be bringing on your headache is the position you sit in all day. Many Americans live a more sedentary lifestyle--sitting in a fixed position for long periods of time. This actually increases joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck and upper back, causing headaches as a result. In other words, you have tension in your neck and upper back, the nerve fibers at the base of your neck and upper spinal cord become irritated, and your head beings to ache as a result.

The good news is that chronic headaches (or just random headaches) can be treated with chiropractic care. There have been numerous studies published that have found that chiropractic care helps relieve the pain that comes with a headache. In addition to this, a chiropractor can help educate you on how to adjust your daily life to prevent the problem that is actually causing the headache. Dr. Redenius can perform a thorough examination to identify the cause of your headache pain. Depending on your specific case, he may perform a chiropractic adjustment to take the pressure off those irritated nerves, easing your headache pain. He will also recommend how you can alter your diet, exercise, ergonomics, posture, and stress management in order to keep neck tension to a minimum. He may also suggest incorporating a product like a Denneroll (more info on the Denneroll here!) to help get to the root of the problem.

Dr. Redenius has gone through extensive training to help his patients in many ways--not just with back pain. He knows how tension in the spine relates to problems in all  areas of the body, and he knows how to relieve those problems while educating you on how to prevent them. The treatment may be as simple as drinking a couple glasses of water.

While the office is not technically open yet (we are hoping the second or third week of August), you can still call and set up an appointment with Dr. Redenius today! Call 712-464-3301 or visit www.lakecitychiro.com to learn how Dr. Redenius can help your headache pain.

An excuse to take a break from work.

The other day I read that, “Sitting is the new smoking.” While that may be a bit dramatic, there is some truth behind it. As was with smoking many years ago, many people today do not realize how harmful sitting for extended periods of time each day can be. Overall, individuals in our culture tend to sit too much, and sitting too much is harmful to our health.

Did you know that the average American sits for eight to nine hours a day? On top of that, we go home and then proceed to lay down and sleep for (hopefully) seven to eight MORE hours every day. That means our bodies are seated or in a horizontal position on an average of sixteen of the twenty-four hours each day.

Mayo Clinic recently published a study describing how sitting prolonged period of time dramatically increased an individual’s risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as other medical problems. In addition to that, when we sit often, we begin to slouch. This slouching can lead to back pain or pinched nerves. Think about how big of an effect you have on your health if you repeatedly slouch while sitting at a desk day after day.

I am sure that we all realize that we should be up and moving around more often, however, you probably want to raise your hand right now and yell out that you make a living at a job that requires you to sit at a desk all day.

Hear us out, though. Even if you do have a job that requires you to stay in a seated position, we have a few tips for getting more movement into your day. These tips can be done at any time of the day, and the best part is that there is no equipment required—it’s free!

The first tip we give you is to periodically (every hour or so) do what we call a seated spine stretch. This stretch helps bring movement to your spine, shoulders, and neck. It is a super simple stretch. The goal of this stretch is to NOT crack or pop your spine, rather, the goal is to decompress the spine and get a great stretch.
To do this stretch:
First: Sit tall to keep your joints open; do not let your spine bend forward.
Second: Place your left hand on the inside of your left knee and exhale as you rotate right.
Third: When you breathe in, turn back to a neutral position and then repeat on the other side. Repeat this stretch 5-10 times on each side.

Our second tip is to simply get up and move. Try to take a break from sitting every 30 minutes. It could be as simple as getting up and taking a few laps around the building. Give your eyes a break. Give your back a break. Get your blood flowing! Set a timer if you have to. Regardless of where you walk or how you remind yourself to get up and do so, make sure you take breaks to get up and move.

Our third tip is to do what we call a seated pigeon stretch.  When you sit all day, you shut down your glute muscles and tighten your legs. When you do this, your piriformis muscles try to do the work of your entire behind. This leads to the squeezing and pinching you sometimes feel in your sciatic nerve. In order to help with this pinching, we suggest doing the following stretch a few times each day.
First: Cross your right leg so your right ankle is resting on your left thigh.
Second: Keep you back straight, and using your arms, keep your right leg horizontal.
Third: Pivot at your hips (NOT YOUR BACK). Keep your back flat so you do not round it.
When you do this, you should feel a good stretch in your gluteal cheek. Repeat this on both legs.

If you make a mental effort to incorporate these three suggestions into your daily life, we promise you will notice the benefits. Some may argue that they do not have time for it, but we disagree. Doctors and researchers have found that you actually get more done in less time when you add activity to your daily life.

Making small changes like this into your daily life can have huge  benefits on your overall health (especially your spinal health)! Stay tuned for updates as to our “official” opening date for Redenius Chiropractic. We are finishing up the interior and are working to get the “back paper work” end of it all ready to go! We are hoping to officially open the first or second week of August.

What is your "Why?"

This past week, my grandma turned 80. A few months prior to that, my grandpa turned 80, and together, they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

While celebrating these milestones with them, I got to look through many old pictures of the life they built together.

Pictures of them as young kids.
Pictures of them as a young couple.
Pictures of them with my mom and her two sisters.
Pictures of them with myself and my cousins.

Taking a moment to look at and reflect on all of those pictures made me realize how short life really is. How can their entire life--a life built on faith, love, family, friendships, travels, etc.--possibly be represented on just one picture board?

I then began to reflect on my own life-- a life that Dr. Redenius and I just started to build together when we got married three short years ago. At times it seems like we've been together for a lifetime--attempting to accomplish so many things together in just three years. And other times--like when I was looking at that picture board--I realize how much more life (hopefully) we have left to live.

It was at that moment that I consciously thought about my "why."

What do I mean by my "why?"

I mean my reason for trying to keep myself healthy (mentally and physically). My reason for waking up at 5:00 AM during the school year to get a workout in. My reason for taking Juice Plus. My reason for eating healthy foods instead of constantly eating the oh-so-delicious chips and brownies that at times sound much more appealing. My reason for getting regular physicals. My reason for having Dr. Redenius adjust me on a regular basis. My reason for investing time into my own health and well-being.

Personally, my "why" is because I want a board like the one my grandparents had. I want a family someday. When we do have a family, I want to be a model of health for my own kids. I want to travel and to experience new things. I can't do that if I am not healthy.

God gave us our bodies as a physical tool to fully experience the world out there. The five senses were no mistake. I can't fully experience life if I'm not healthy enough to do so. If I don't invest in my own health, I'm afraid I won't have a picture board like my grandparents.

So, what is your "why?"

Maybe your why is to invest in your health so that you can get on the ground and wrestle around with your grandkids.

Maybe your why is to invest in your health so that you can kick that bad habit.

Maybe your why is to invest in your health to prevent illness (anxiety, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) that may run in your family.

Maybe your why is to invest in your health so that you can just feel better, or maybe you want to be a better role model for your kids or grandkids.

Whatever the case, you need a "why". You need a reason. Because if you don't, you are more likely to give up on it.

Once you find your "why," you NEED to take action. If you don't immediately, you will lose the ambition to do so.

And stop making excuses and inventing reasons as to why you can't invest in your own health.

So find your "why," and then come try out PiYo or Turbo Kick. Come experience how exciting a Zumba or Cardio Sculpt or Aerobics class can be. Schedule an appointment to get a regular physical or adjustment with Dr. Redenius. Send us an e-mail to get more information on Juice Plus (lakecity24hourfitness@gmail.com). Whatever you do, act now---before you lose sight of your "why."

Make yourself a priority-- for yourself and for your "why."

We're never too old to stop learning, right?

Being a teacher, I am partial to believe that educators have a large impact on the lives of the students they teach. I am partial not only because I am a teacher myself, but also because I had a few teachers who impacted the person I am today.

One of those teachers was my professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Iowa. I very vividly remember the day I learned a very important life lesson from him. As I often did, I had stayed after class to talk with him, and we got on the subject of my future career. It was in this conversation that he told me, "Jen- you need to think about what you love doing more than anything else, and then find a way to make money doing it. That is what your career needs to be."

I went home that night and realized that some day owning an "all-in-one" coffee shop/book store/fitness center/wine bar/office to write an award winning novel in was not all that practical (one out of the five is not too bad, right?), so I stuck to my initial plan of teaching, and I have loved it ever since. I do remember, though, telling Dr. Redenius about the conversation I had with my professor later that night, and I asked him what he would do. His response was simple. He wanted to help people become better versions of themselves, so he became a Doctor of Chiropractic.

It was this same professor who taught me the value of learning, and that we should never, ever stop learning. I recently did a book study on the book titled Most Likely to Succeed by Ted Dintersmith and Tony Wagner. Essentially, the book outlines how we have to change the way we teach our students in order to prepare them for a 21st Century world (it's a fascinating read that I encourage all to read). While I was reading it, though, I realized how much of the same ideology in regards to a shift in educational pedagogy can apply to adults today. We, too, need to shift the way we are educating ourselves for the future. And as adults, we should never stop striving to learn more while being open to new ideas.

So, how does all of this relate to Redenius Chiropractic?

Well, in my short time as a Doctor of Chiropractic's wife, I have come to realize how many people are resistant to chiropractic or preventative health care simply because they do not understand what it is, or are resistant to learning more about it. I am no exception. Many are shocked to find that my first time seeing a chiropractor was when Jeff and I visited Palmer College for the first time. I, however, was like many other community members--unaware of how it can help me. So, in the following few paragraphs, I hope to educate our readers on what chiropractic is and why it can help you--especially in this 21st century society we live in today. Because we are never too old to stop learning, right?

First, a simple Google search will tell you that Chiropractic way more than "back-cracking." Chiropractic is a system of medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments. The term doctor itself was used for many centuries (before universities or degrees were around) to refer to an especially learned person, or a person who was authorized to teach a particular subject. In this regard, then, a Doctor of Chiropractic is not only responsible for patient care, but for educating their patients as well on how to become better versions of themselves. Chiropractic actually began in 1895 when Daniel David Palmer (originally from Iowa) performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a partially deaf janitor. A fun fact many do not know is that Iowa is the birth place of chiropractic, and people from literally all over the world move to Davenport to get their doctoral degree in chiropractic.

Another thing that many people do not realize is that the body does not perform as a cluster of separate entities, but rather, a series of events that all originate from the nervous system. The nerves in the body that control every function of the body originate in the spinal cord, and if their transmission is disrupted, we experience noticeable effects. This disruption is what a Doctor of Chiropractic would refer to as a "subluxation." You may think you are just going to get adjusted, but in reality, you are altering so much more than that when a Doctor of Chiropractic adjusts a subluxation. Below is an image that briefly explains what I am trying to get at here.

A large amount of patients also do not realize that pain is the LAST symptom of dysfunction in your body. Chiropractor's will tell you that a patient's back is often restricted for months or years before a person shows up in a chiropractor's office. In addition to this, patient's do not often realize that the absence of pain does not mean health. For example, you may take a pill if you get a head ache. While that pill may take the pain away, the dysfunction that is causing that pain is still there. That is why individuals should strive to be proactive in regards to their health care.

Much of the public also does not realize that a Doctor of Chiropractic knows SO MUCH MORE about the body than just the backbone! Doctor's of Chiropractic go through almost four years of post-graduate, rigorous education. They are required to take five rounds of extremely difficult board examinations. It often times surprises people that Doctors of Chiropractic give advice on nutrition, fitness, screen for conditions unrelated to the musculoskeletal system, and refer out to specialists when necessary. Below is a snap shot that summarizes the curriculum a Doctor of Chiropractic undergoes prior to graduation (D.C. refers to a Doctor of Chiropractic).

In relation to all of this, many individuals do not know all of the services Dr. Redenius provides. In addition to nutritional counseling, DOT and sports physicals, manual therapies, decompression therapy, and traditional chiropractic care; he treats everything from migraines to asthma to ear aches. For a full list of his services, feel free to visit www.lakecitychiro.com.

Hopefully after reading through this short "mini-lesson" on chiropractic, you've learned something you did not know before about what Dr. Redenius can provide to you and your family. Like my professor told me to do, Jeff has found something he loves (helping people become better versions of themselves), and is making a career out of it. We both are eagerly anticipating this coming August when he officially opens his office to patients.
